Small and Simple Digital Camcorder That Really Delivers
Posted by lapantz4less on August 17, 2008
The Flip Ultra, the second and better version of the original Flip digital camcorder from Pure Digital hit the market by storm. The Flip Ultra can definitely be dubbed as the “simply perfect” digital camcorder.
Non-Existent Features of the Flip Ultra
The screen is tiny (1.5 inches) and doesn’t swing out for self-portraits. No still shots. There are no settings, menu buttons, no light, no lens cap and no memory card. No optical zoom, only a 2 x digital zoom. The entire unit is pocket size, has three buttons, play, stop and trash. Works with AA batteries (alkalines last about 2 hours and re-chargeables about 5 hours).
No tapes or disks, all footage is downloaded via attached USB plug, which pops out at 90 degrees to the camera body, plug that into the computer and download the footage. The Flip’s icon appears on your screen as though it’s a disk. When you open it, you find a folder full of video clips, which you can play, copy to your hard drive and burn to DVD and edit in most standard editing programs. You can also use a special cable to plug it into the TV and watch footage.
The Flip Ultra Filming Process
Press the red button once to record and once to stop. Press play to review the video and then trash to delete scene. That’s it! It is the most simple of digital camcorders that fits anywhere and everywhere, and is light enough for a baby to hold.
Size Does Matter
It’s size allows it to go anywhere, and everywhere where a traditional camcorder may not, like a purse, beach bag, or pocket. It’s rugged so you can take it skiing, to the playground, while playing a sport and virtually anywhere where you might need to shoot some clips. There is even a acrylic accessory case that allows you to take it underwater!
Digital Video Quality
With all this simplicity and a low retail price of under $150, the Flip Ultra digital camcorder delivers an amazingly good picture quality. It has TV resolution (640 x 480 pixels, 30 frames per second).
The most amazing feature of the Flip Ultra is the low-light ability, which trumps even the most expensive of digital camcorders. Not only is the video grain-free, but recorded dim scenes actually look brighter than they looked to the naked eye.

Back-to-School Organizing Tips for the Mom-On-The-Go
Posted by lapantz4less on August 17, 2008
Back to school can be a stressful time of year. Families must change from the laid-back summer schedule to the non-stop school and activity calendars that keep moms jumping from one activity to the next without a moment’s rest. Fortunately, today there is help.
GO MOM !NC, a leader in products to help you organize your busy life, provides its latest advice to keep Moms organized as they get their families back-to-school this fall. “Across the nation, busy parents are focused on easing their children into the new school year,” states Molly Gold, founder of GO MOM !NC. “My role as a Family Scheduling Expert is to help Moms focus on how they can better organize themselves to be ready for all that change and be mindful of how their own workload will evolve alongside of their family.”
Want the cliff notes on how you can get organized for Fall 2006? Take a look below:
Plan Ahead – The only way you can command your time is to consciously map it. Simply put, use a family-oriented planner that enables you to track all family members’ schedules in one place. When you monitor your family schedule, you can then plan how and when to accomplish important back-to-school tasks, such as replacing clothes, purchasing school supplies, and attending back-to-school night. Stock your kids’ homework stations with pencil and paper basics while purchasing classroom items. Take it one step further by creating an emergency project box full of grade appropriate tools that will hold the night before anxiety at bay. Visit Target stores for an ample supply of poster board, report folders, markers, glue sticks, and an assortment of interesting arts and crafts items in small quantities to allow your child’s creativity to shine, one project at a time.
Plan for Paper – Before you start stacking all those important school papers in a long forgotten corner of your kitchen, or on top of last month’s bills, put your paper trail in place beginning with in/out boxes for each family member. Show everyone where to place their papers and then sort them daily with your planner at hand to note important deadlines and tasks. When setting up your own filing system, check out the new GO MOM!® School Organizer. With monthly pockets for everything from school-related projects and fundraisers, to teacher newsletters and activities rosters, you can’t help but be ready for the first round of parent/teacher conferences at the end of first quarter. If it’s your house that keeps you buried, you’ll find the GO MOM!® Home Organizer to be equally as effective in helping you categorize and sort the most important papers as you manage your family’s busy days.
Plan to Purge – We all do better with a clean, organized environment. If you haven’t yet gone through everyone’s closets, dressers, and bedrooms while evaluating wardrobes for school, do it as soon as you have your routine in motion. Make room for the year ahead by rounding up all outgrown items, discarding everything that can’t be repaired, both in the toy and clothing departments. For items in good condition, arrange for a charitable donation or enlist your kids’ help and plan a yard sale in late September. Take advantage of your clean slate and give each room a quick cleaning with an all-purpose cleaner like Mr. Clean Extra Power Multi-Surface Cleaner for even the toughest jobs. From scrubbing baseboards to replacing air filters, flipping mattresses and cleaning windows, Fall is a great time to freshen your home and welcome the change of seasons. And for Moms of older kids, enlist their helping hands as you plow through this process. Respect and responsibility for both our possessions and environment are life skills worth teaching. GO MOM !NC is based in Apex, NC and promotes the use of The GO MOM!® Organizer and GO MOM!® Planner, unique day planner systems for everything that is family. Founder Molly Gold is a 40-year-old mother of three and the creator of the GO MOM!® product line, which will grow this September to include The GO MOM!® Wall Organizer, The GO MOM!® School Organizer, and The GO MOM!® Home Organizer. All products in the GO MOM!® line are produced via license partnership with Mead Westvaco Consumer and Office Products and sold at major retailers nationwide, including Target, Staples, and Office Max. GO MOM !NC helps mothers make positive mothering a daily reality within the structure GO MOM!® Schedule. Organize. Grow.® Gold is known for her keen insights into Family Scheduling and has been featured both in print and on air media alike and is currently available for media interviews.

Tips on Buying a New Digital Camera by RYAN DUBE
Posted by lapantz4less on June 2, 2008
Digital photography is fun, convenient, and you can see the rewards of your labors quickly. No film required, no sending film off to be developed, what could be easier? Before you run out and buy the most expensive digital camera with the most megapixels and the highest optical zoom you need to do some research.
Digital cameras can be expensive so the first thing you need to consider is how you will use your new digital camera. If your main use of digital photographs is to post pics of your buddies on FaceBook or MySpace, you will not require the same digital camera that you will need if you are taking pictures and getting paid for it, such as at a wedding. People generally fall into one of three categories of digital camera usage:
Snappers – You need a simple point and click camera that produces reasonable quality digital photographs. Perfect for people who don’t want much fuss and rarely print their pictures.
Hobbyists – You may want to be a little creative occasionally. You may take a few close ups, night shots etc. and are attempting to learn Photoshop. You print some of your pictures and want good quality 8” x 10” prints.
Pro/Semi-pro – You want a camera that delivers top quality photographs, operates fast and is adaptable. You want excellent print quality and sturdy construction.
How Many Megapixels Do You Need?
One way to decide how many megapixels you need is to decide what you may want to do with your pictures after you take them. This chart is a guide to the amount of megapixels you may need to get a good quality print of the various sizes:
Megapixels: (MP) – Quality prints up to this size: Minimum of 2MP – 4” x 6” Minimum of 3MP – 5” x 7” Minimum of 6MP – 8” x 10” Minimum of 8MP – 10” x 12”
Digital Zoom and Optical Zoom
Most digital cameras have both optical zoom and digital zoom. The optical zoom works just like a zoom lens on a film camera; the lens changes focal length and magnification as it is zoomed. The image quality stays high throughout the zoom range. A digital zoom simply crops the image to a smaller size, and then enlarges the cropped portion to fill the frame again. Digital zoom results in a significant loss of quality. You can do a similar if not better job using an image editing program such as Photoshop. You can find a free Photoshop download at Adobe.com.
How to Get a Good Digital Camera for Less
To save a little money, look for a camera that has been out about a year. Also style can cost you more; if picture quality is important to you, disregard the shiny model for the not so stylish one that takes great pictures. Stick with brands that are established camera manufacturers; digital cameras are made in basically the same way as film cameras, but in digital photography, light falls onto an image sensor and not onto film. The other parts of the camera are basically the same. Unless you really need special features for your digital photography, don’t pay for them.
After you get your new digital camera home, start using it! Luckily, digital camera memory is cheap and can be reused thousands of times. So get out there and shoot some photos and you’ll soon find your skills improving remarkably.

Why I Buy My Computers And Other Electronics Online
Posted by lapantz4less on May 26, 2008
I must admit that I’d be absolutely lost without the growing number of desktop and laptop computers, printers, digital cameras and all the other assorted electronic equipment in my house and home office. I know I once got along without all this gear, but that was back in the olden days, in the last millennium. Today I absolutely depend on it. What this means is that I buy a lot of stuff, and I have formed some definite opinions about where I do my shopping and what places I avoid like the plague.
I hate to say it, but #1 on my list of places to avoid are the big electronics chain stores. They are certainly convenient and their prices are usually in the ballpark. And all their glossy brochures have lured me more than once when I quickly needed some RAM, a disk, or a new inkjet printer. Problem is that their sales people are embarrassingly clueless and often only interested in selling extended service contracts. No thank you.
When I build a new desktop computer I occasionally buy the parts from a local electronics superstore. Those places are a geek’s paradise, or they could be if it weren’t for a couple of really annoying deal breakers. First, half of the boards don’t work after I bring them home. And second, I absolutely refuse to buy things that are only a good deal after a mail-in rebate or two. I’ve been burned too many times with rebates. No more.
Office supply stores are stocking more and more electronic equipment. So when I go buy a ream of paper or some other small stuff I often end up looking at their laptops and digital cameras. And once I even bought a notebook computer there, something that I later regretted as here was, of course, no service or support. I actually like the office supply stores and have no problem buying things like laser printer cartridges there, but that’s about it for computer stuff.
Another bad practice that’s taking over is luring customers with low prices, make them wade through several order screens, and then break the bad news, like some gargantuan shipping charge or that, sadly, the item is not in stock. Do that to me once and I won’t be back.
So where do I get most of my electronics gear? Online. I love being able to browse online stores at my leisure, without any sales pressure and usually with all the information I need. I like neat, clean just-the-facts stores that specialize on the kind of gear I want. I don’t need useless “reviews” by folks who always seem to have an axe to grind or hate everything. And I don’t need long lists of the 99 lowest prices on the web. All I want is information and a good selection. I do expect a degree of customer support in case I have questions, and most of the better online stores can handle that easily.
Had someone told me 10 or 15 years ago that some day I’d buy things like laptops, digital cameras, printers or even desktop computers online from some website far away, I’d have laughed. But that’s where I get most of my electronic equipment and gadgets from these days, and I’ve rarely ever had a bad experience. Those online stores seem to try a lot harder, and that’s good news for guys like me.

How to Pick a Good Pair of Binoculars
Posted by lapantz4less on May 17, 2008
Binoculars aka field glasses are like two telescopes pointed at the same area. It is easy to perceive depth because it has two lenses and not just one, like a monocular.
The binoculars have been around since about the 17th century after telescopes have been invented. People use to mount two telescopes side by side and looked through them with both eyes.
Between the 1850-1890s, a prism type of binocular was invented that allowed greater depth perception by allowing the eye pieces to be spaced wider apart. These binoculars allow greater magnification.
The most affordable binoculars are porro prisms that allow for brighter images and are precise instruments. These binoculars are wider and sometimes need to be re-aligned.
An expensive kind of prism binocular is the roof prism binocular. This binocular is smaller and narrower but loses some brightness. The good think about them is that they usually never have to be re-alligned. They are also much lighter. Optical coating fixes this problem. That is why many roof prism binoculars are coated.
Optical Coating is a great feature that helps make a brighter image by reducing the amount of light that is reflected. Reflected light inside the binoculars makes the image hazy.
General Binoculars are focused by moving a round wheel that focuses both telescopes at once. More sophisticated binoculars use independent focus which means that each side of the binocular needs to be adjusted individually.
Some binoculars have image stabilization technology which dampen sudden movement. It can usually be turned on or off by the user. This means that very high powered binoculars can be hand held when normally they couldn’t. The image quality is not always as good for stabilized binoculars, and they are usually more expensive.
Coin-operated binoculars are very popular in many tourist attractions. They allow a more detailed view. These are always mounted on a pedestal and are usually high powered.
Military Binoculars are usually hand held and at a magnification of 5x or 7x. Military binoculars are more rugged and sturdy than regular binoculars and they also use independent focusing because it is more sturdy than central focusing. Most military binoculars also have special features that help it work when wet or to block out laser beams. Sea binoculars are meant to be easier on the eyes because of the sea rocking back and forth.
Astronomical Binoculars allow people to view certain elements of the sky from far away. There are many moons and planets that can be viewed with binoculars. Pluto, Eris and Uranus can all be seen easier with the use of binoculars. Some users use lower magnification binoculars so they can have a larger field of view than if they used a higher magnification.

Smart Phones Are Us
Posted by lapantz4less on May 13, 2008
Submitted By: Dave Text
Smart phones are mobile phones with computer-like features making them versatile to substitute a plethora of devices. For manufacturers they are about design and software, for users they are about functionality.
Smart phones are mobile phones with advanced features, generally combining standard communications capabilities with rich data applications and enhanced connectivity. As such, smart phones have as much in common with computers as they do with mobile phones. Smart phones often have fully enhanced applications that allow them to perform tasks that are above and beyond the functions of a regular mobile phone that us supplemented only by sandboxed applications. For the manufacturers such as Nokia, Samsung, Sony-Ericcson, Blackberry, Motorola, BenQ, LG and Apple, they are a question of design and software.
The IBM Simon was the first smart phone made commercially available in 1993. It was designed by IBM in collaboration with Bellsouth, introducing it first as a concept product in a computer trade show held in Las Vegas, Nevada, circa 1992. Simon combined the features of a mobile phone, a pager, a PDA and a fax machine, with the following specific applications: calendar, address book, world clock, calculator, notepad, e-mail, a sending and receiving fax, and games. Users could navigate through these applications by an on-screen “predictive” QWERTY keyboard.
By today’s technological advance of smart phones, the Simon would be fairly along the lower end of the spectrum. Smart phones presently have a general versatility to substitute a plethora of devices, handheld or otherwise. Any present-day smart phone may be a datebook or planner, a Web browser, an MP3 player, a video and/or still camera, an FM radio tuner, an audio recorder, or a GPS navigator, among others. Additionally, modern smart phones have enhanced connectivity with the use of Bluetooth and Infrared technology, and even wireless Internet capability for high-end models. These technologies help smart phones connect to other devices such as other phones or computers.
For the end-users, smart phones are all about functionality. The looks of the phone help as recent models are sleeker and more appealing to the eye, however for smart phone connoisseurs, the main selling point is still the number of things it can do.
Smart phones have become a necessity for a great many individuals, particularly those who spend a great deal of time away from their homes and/or offices. The main target market for smart phones are professionals who need constant and regular access to e-mails, pertinent files as well appointment books and contact details. Executives are often inseparable from their smart phones as it contains a great deal of their work life. With recent developments in onboard multimedia features, smart phones have also become media players for those constantly on the road as well as tools for people in the creative field who need regular access to media playing and media capturing devices.
Prospective buyers should consider that purchasing a smart phone is not just about the latest model, the sleekest look or the price of the model. The smart phone should fit the demands of that buyers’ life, enabling them to maximize the use of the phone and complementing their everyday demands.
Certain smart phone models may not have all the latest applications or the most modern operating system, but its capabilities may fit the needs and requirements of a professional photographer or a yuppy. A certain model may not have sufficient memory to hold a large number of documents but its versatility and speed in performing other tasks may make it a necessary tool in someone’s life.
Whatever the case may be, smart phones are only as good as their owners. Once a user decides to pick up one type of smart phone and that smart phone fits the user’s needs perfectly then that makes it a very useful phone.
