Flash Drives

Posted by lapantz4less on August 31, 2008

Flash Storage Drives are wonderful little devices. Gone are the days of storing three or four word documents on your floppy disk. Now you can store tens of thousands of documents and files on a single tiny flash storage drive! They are very resilient, so you no longer have to worry about dropping it, or storing it near a magnet. Your data is much safer on a flash storage drive then it ever was on a floppy disk! If you often use more than one computer (such as one at work or school, and one at home), you know how important it is to be able to move files between your computers. Flash storage drives make it simple. All you have to do is plug it in the USB slot, copy your files over, and you’re done. There’s really nothing to it. Despite their ease of use and convenience, flash storage drives are also very inexpensive. For around 10 dollars, sometimes less, you can now get a basic drive that will suit most of your needs.

There are also a few other neat uses for Flash Storage Drives you may not know about. For instance, you can store music on them, so you can listen to your favorite songs anywhere you can plug it into a PC. There is also new audio equipment that has a built-in USB port so you can just plug a USB flash drive directly into the unit and listen to your music without a PC!

You can also use your flash storage drives to encrypt sensitive data. There are freely available programs such as TrueCrypt that will allow you to encode your data with a password so that if your flash drive gets lost or stolen, the files will be unreadable by anyone without the password.

Flash Storage Drives also make a great toolkit for PC repair. Just load your favorite antivirus, antispyware, and diagnostic tools on the drive and you’re ready to go! There are many more uses for flash storage drives, and with a little creativity you’ll be amazed at how versatile and handy they can be!

What is Computer Memory? An Introduction For Beginners

Posted by lapantz4less on August 31, 2008

Computers are commonly said to have brains and a memory. They are said to “think”, “learn”, and “react”. However, computers aren’t made up of living cells and tissue. These terms don’t mean the same things as they do when applied to a living, breathing being. Computer memory is the next best thing and this capability of the computer assists in the daily lives of millions of people in a variety of professions.

The most commonly known form of computer memory is RAM. Even school children know these initial, which stand for Random Access Memory. This is a volatile form of memory. Translated to laymen’s terms, volatile simply means temporary. It is not a long term memory and would best be compared to our own short term memory abilities. The information is there and being accessed by our memory when needed, but gone when it becomes unnecessary for the computer to access it in order to complete a command given by its user.

Volatile memory is sometimes referred to as dynamic because it can change and be changed. Non-volatile forms of it are sometimes referred to as static memory. It can be stored and is stable. The memory of a computer in this capacity indicates that it is not temporary in nature. A computer has both forms of memory just as we have short and long term memories. In essence, the computer and its memory are designed in a way that is reminiscent of the human brain.

What we have to remember about computers is that it is also important to know there are several types of memory, both volatile and non-volatile forms of it. Other types of computer memory include: RAM (both dynamic and static), ROM, cache, flash, virtual, video, and BIOS. There are also memory sticks. Each type of memory has specific purposes and functions and not all computers have all forms of memory. This is what makes each computer’s performance unique just as our brains are what make us unique.

It’s also important to realize that computer memory is not limited to desktops and laptops. The various types we commonly associate with computers are found in many of the electronics we use every day. Not all types are used in all electronic devices, but the individual types are located in them just the same. Some of these electronics include cell phones, PDAs (Personal Data Assistants), and radios. Even televisions and VCRs use computer memory.

The most commonly known electronic device that uses computer memory for children is the game consoles in today’s popular systems. While adults play these intriguing entertainment outlets as well, teens and kids know them best. What most children don’t realize is that the game “remembers” their ending point from a previous session of play due to the capacity of its memory. Without memory, the game console wouldn’t even remember what game to play!

Computer memory is the capacity of a computerized device to remember or run an application that makes it work the way we expect it to work when we turn it on. It is different than electricity, since that is a current that basically, in simplistic terms, wakes up the electronic, computerized device we wish to use. Computer memory makes the devices we use come to life-or as close to life as technology can get.

Dual Or Quad? Which is Better?

Posted by lapantz4less on August 31, 2008

There have been many heated debates amongst many PC enthusiasts about which CPU in cores is better. Some say a dual core is better because the cores are clocked higher than a similar price quad. Others say a quad is better because it has twice the amount of cores as a dual core. So which one is the better product?

Back when single core CPU’s dominated the market, they key to processing information quicker was determined by the FSB and maxing out the clock speed. Eventually, both Intel and AMD hit the limitation of single threaded processing. To make logical sense of why we have more than one core nowadays is because programs are making use of pipelining, a way of processing instructions faster. Instead of waiting for one thread to finish, pipelining allows the next thread to start once the first step in the machine cycles has been completed.

Imagine a dual core processing four instructions; it would need to complete the first two threads before it could start the next two. But if we use a quad core to process it, it could start all four threads at the same time.

Quad core is better then, right? In theory, yes, but only if programs are optimized for multi-threading, which at the moment there aren’t a lot. This is where dual core tends to have an edge over quad. It processes a thread at a faster rate just like the single core CPU’s did.
So if your gamer and need the best value/ performance ratio, the dual core is your winner because there aren’t many games that utilize four cores. However, if you’re a video editor, or use CAD or any other design/editing tool, chances are they have been optimized for pipelining, in which quad cores process well. But what if your someone that surfs the net, plays the occasional game and edits photos? This is where most people are at, and generally speaking, if you’re not a power user, a dual core should suffice. But if you’re running Adobe Photoshop, MSN messenger, have a web browser open and are maybe encoding a video file all at the same time, a quad core would be the best choice. Why? Because running four different programs at once would allow each core of the CPU to be utilized and not bring the computer speed to a crawl.

As a result, to say which one is better is a hard call for it to be universal, rather the best one is dependent on your own needs.

Posted by lapantz4less on August 17, 2008

When investing your time and money, it always makes sense that you would want to choose something that is going to do well, right from the start. This is no longer the case for only women; men nowadays are looking at improving their appearances as well. With anti-aging face and skin lifting products, both men and women can reclaim their youthful appearance and also helps them to increase their confidence. Some men are shy to buy the skin care products over the counter; therefore if you are looking at creating an online shopping mall, this will enable them to shop at the comfort of their own home.

Small and Simple Digital Camcorder That Really Delivers

Posted by lapantz4less on August 17, 2008

The Flip Ultra, the second and better version of the original Flip digital camcorder from Pure Digital hit the market by storm. The Flip Ultra can definitely be dubbed as the “simply perfect” digital camcorder.
Non-Existent Features of the Flip Ultra

The screen is tiny (1.5 inches) and doesn’t swing out for self-portraits. No still shots. There are no settings, menu buttons, no light, no lens cap and no memory card. No optical zoom, only a 2 x digital zoom. The entire unit is pocket size, has three buttons, play, stop and trash. Works with AA batteries (alkalines last about 2 hours and re-chargeables about 5 hours).

No tapes or disks, all footage is downloaded via attached USB plug, which pops out at 90 degrees to the camera body, plug that into the computer and download the footage. The Flip’s icon appears on your screen as though it’s a disk. When you open it, you find a folder full of video clips, which you can play, copy to your hard drive and burn to DVD and edit in most standard editing programs. You can also use a special cable to plug it into the TV and watch footage.

The Flip Ultra Filming Process

Press the red button once to record and once to stop. Press play to review the video and then trash to delete scene. That’s it! It is the most simple of digital camcorders that fits anywhere and everywhere, and is light enough for a baby to hold.

Size Does Matter

It’s size allows it to go anywhere, and everywhere where a traditional camcorder may not, like a purse, beach bag, or pocket. It’s rugged so you can take it skiing, to the playground, while playing a sport and virtually anywhere where you might need to shoot some clips. There is even a acrylic accessory case that allows you to take it underwater!

Digital Video Quality

With all this simplicity and a low retail price of under $150, the Flip Ultra digital camcorder delivers an amazingly good picture quality. It has TV resolution (640 x 480 pixels, 30 frames per second).

The most amazing feature of the Flip Ultra is the low-light ability, which trumps even the most expensive of digital camcorders. Not only is the video grain-free, but recorded dim scenes actually look brighter than they looked to the naked eye.

Key Features of the Best Laptops

Posted by lapantz4less on August 17, 2008

This simple laptop buying guide is a user friendly “how-to” for those of you, who like me, cannot stand techie jargon because let’s face it life is just too short!!
A laptop, also known as a notebook is simply a portable computer that runs on a battery and can be used anywhere without being stuck to a plug.

KEY FEATURES TO LOOK AT WHEN BUYING A LAPTOP

Processor: The processor of a laptop determines how fast a computer is and the speed is given in GHz. Best: Intel Core 2 Duo processor The Intel Core 2 Duo is one of the best in processors. Provides superior performance at half the cost of other similar types as well as a great battery life. 1.73 GHz processor is more than sufficient for everyday work like word processing, spreadsheets, email and internet surfing.

Memory (RAM): RAM refers to the amount of programs you can run on your laptops without running into slow downs and causing your laptop to drag. 512MB RAM is the optimal amount of memory and the best option for gaming and 3-D graphics. Tip: The RAM the laptop supports tells you the most memory you will be able to upgrade to.

Hard drive: 40-80 GB hard drive is more than sufficient unless you plan to generate mass amounts of music or data files or if you want to install more than one suite like Microsoft Office.

All-in-one design Unless you really need a lightweight laptop, choose one with an internal bay for the optical drive. Simply put this drive lets you to swap in other devices, such as an extra hard drive or a second battery.

Screen size: When you buy a laptop and you don’t want to sacrifice viewing comfort in order to gain portability. The screen size dimension of laptops is measured diagonally across the screen. A screen larger than 14 inches is best to avoid strain on the eyes. Larger screens or wide screens result in heavier laptops and are more bulky but do provide a more comfortable experience whether you’re surfing the net or watching movies.

Screen Viewing: An anti-glare feature is very beneficial when you don’t want to have part of your screen invisible due to a light source. Outside-readable screens are made to use in very bright light (outside) and are very costly. Wide Screen viewing angle is important if you don’t like decreased visibility when you move your head to the side.

Weight: A 5 pound plus laptop is best. Ultra light laptops, below 4 pounds have cramped keyboards, less speed and memory, usually no CD or DVD drive and smaller screens. If you buy an ultra-light laptop, its performance may be so compromised that after all of the accessories you carry with it are added up (a CD drive, a larger battery, a better keyboard, etc…) it may weigh as much as a regular 5 or 6 lb laptop.

Battery: Watt-hours determine the life of a battery. Lithium batteries use cells to determine life, more cells equals more life. Usually a laptop needs a new battery every 1 to 5 years. The way you determine battery consumption depends on how you use the laptop. Most battery ratings are given for a computer running minimal processes which does not include Internet usage, graphics, power-save mode etc. TIP:If you want more more freedom from the outlet buy a laptop that has a modular bay which is capable of holding a supplementary power pack.

Wireless: When buying a laptop Wireless Internet Capability is necessary if you’d like to surf the net without being tied to a wire. One of the best things about laptops is that you could surf the net anywhere and WI-FI provides just that. Wireless cards are easily installed into most laptops.

Keyboard: The keyboard should be full size or it will take some time to adjust. TIP: Look for the % of full size when looking at the keyboard features of a laptop.

Mouse Options: Option 1: is a touch screen, which is controlled with finger movements on a pad. Option 2: is a knob feature that lets you control the mouse by moving the finger in only one spot. This feature is harder to adjust and unless you have a preference get the touch panel. Option 3 – Best: get both a touch screen and knob on your laptop. TIP: You can always hook up a standard mouse to your laptop.

Ports: Simply put a port is a specialized outlet on the back of a computer to which a plug or cable connects. (If you’d read the techie definition you would have passed out by now). The more ports you have the more variety you will have.

At least one USB (multipurpose, very useful port) and at least one VGA (video connection to external monitor/ projector) are very important. An Ethernet Port for wired Internet connection. Headphone and microphone ports.

Other ports include: FireWire port for iPod connections. S-video port for video output. Printer port. PC card slots (card bus), which provide a large variety of functions.

Audio: Media Centers have higher quality speakers built-in. Laptops that save weight and space will have small speakers which gives just an OK sound quality and quiet music.

Video/Graphics: This is important for playing and editing movies and is crucial for 3D gaming. Dedicated memory usually comes with a graphics card (ATI Radeon, GeForce, etc…) and has its own memory in MB which includes 32MB, 64MB, and 128MB. TIP: If video/gaming is important to you pick the highest one you can afford. TIP: To get an idea of what memory you might need you can refer to the back of your games or media software CD-case or manual to see the “system requirements” for the video memory requirements.

Virus Security: Viruses and spyware are just as dangerous on a laptop as a desktop computer. Good anti-virus and spyware software is essential to the health of your computer and data.

Laptop Security: Since laptops are portable and mobile, security is important to protect your laptop and data from theft. A variety of methods are available including cables and biometric fingerprint readers.

Back-to-School Organizing Tips for the Mom-On-The-Go

Posted by lapantz4less on August 17, 2008

Back to school can be a stressful time of year. Families must change from the laid-back summer schedule to the non-stop school and activity calendars that keep moms jumping from one activity to the next without a moment’s rest. Fortunately, today there is help.
GO MOM !NC, a leader in products to help you organize your busy life, provides its latest advice to keep Moms organized as they get their families back-to-school this fall. “Across the nation, busy parents are focused on easing their children into the new school year,” states Molly Gold, founder of GO MOM !NC. “My role as a Family Scheduling Expert is to help Moms focus on how they can better organize themselves to be ready for all that change and be mindful of how their own workload will evolve alongside of their family.”

Want the cliff notes on how you can get organized for Fall 2006? Take a look below:

Plan Ahead – The only way you can command your time is to consciously map it. Simply put, use a family-oriented planner that enables you to track all family members’ schedules in one place. When you monitor your family schedule, you can then plan how and when to accomplish important back-to-school tasks, such as replacing clothes, purchasing school supplies, and attending back-to-school night. Stock your kids’ homework stations with pencil and paper basics while purchasing classroom items. Take it one step further by creating an emergency project box full of grade appropriate tools that will hold the night before anxiety at bay. Visit Target stores for an ample supply of poster board, report folders, markers, glue sticks, and an assortment of interesting arts and crafts items in small quantities to allow your child’s creativity to shine, one project at a time.

Plan for Paper – Before you start stacking all those important school papers in a long forgotten corner of your kitchen, or on top of last month’s bills, put your paper trail in place beginning with in/out boxes for each family member. Show everyone where to place their papers and then sort them daily with your planner at hand to note important deadlines and tasks. When setting up your own filing system, check out the new GO MOM!® School Organizer. With monthly pockets for everything from school-related projects and fundraisers, to teacher newsletters and activities rosters, you can’t help but be ready for the first round of parent/teacher conferences at the end of first quarter. If it’s your house that keeps you buried, you’ll find the GO MOM!® Home Organizer to be equally as effective in helping you categorize and sort the most important papers as you manage your family’s busy days.

Plan to Purge – We all do better with a clean, organized environment. If you haven’t yet gone through everyone’s closets, dressers, and bedrooms while evaluating wardrobes for school, do it as soon as you have your routine in motion. Make room for the year ahead by rounding up all outgrown items, discarding everything that can’t be repaired, both in the toy and clothing departments. For items in good condition, arrange for a charitable donation or enlist your kids’ help and plan a yard sale in late September. Take advantage of your clean slate and give each room a quick cleaning with an all-purpose cleaner like Mr. Clean Extra Power Multi-Surface Cleaner for even the toughest jobs. From scrubbing baseboards to replacing air filters, flipping mattresses and cleaning windows, Fall is a great time to freshen your home and welcome the change of seasons. And for Moms of older kids, enlist their helping hands as you plow through this process. Respect and responsibility for both our possessions and environment are life skills worth teaching. GO MOM !NC is based in Apex, NC and promotes the use of The GO MOM!® Organizer and GO MOM!® Planner, unique day planner systems for everything that is family. Founder Molly Gold is a 40-year-old mother of three and the creator of the GO MOM!® product line, which will grow this September to include The GO MOM!® Wall Organizer, The GO MOM!® School Organizer, and The GO MOM!® Home Organizer. All products in the GO MOM!® line are produced via license partnership with Mead Westvaco Consumer and Office Products and sold at major retailers nationwide, including Target, Staples, and Office Max. GO MOM !NC helps mothers make positive mothering a daily reality within the structure GO MOM!® Schedule. Organize. Grow.® Gold is known for her keen insights into Family Scheduling and has been featured both in print and on air media alike and is currently available for media interviews.
